Late in the afternoon on Friday, March 6, 2009, we joined the San Diego River Estuary Walk (already in progress) after returning from our Pacific Rocky Shores Trip (San Diego Bird Festival). We saw this male Ruddy Duck swimming in the estuary. Long, stiff tail feathers serve as a rudder for this diving duck. During breeding season, this male's bill will turn a bright blue. Heck, he is already shouting (or should I say quacking) out orders. Temperatures were in the upper 60's on this partly cloudy afternoon.
